To understand how we can create the purest drinking water in your home, we must first look at one of nature’s most fundamental processes. Osmosis is a biological and chemical reaction that occurs naturally throughout nature. In short, osmosis is all about balance.
Imagine a liquid divided into two chambers by a thin wall – a so-called semi-permeable membrane. This membrane acts like an ultra-fine mesh. The holes in the mesh are so small that water molecules can easily pass through, while larger particles such as salt, sugar and minerals are retained.
If one chamber contains pure water and the other chamber contains water with a high concentration of salt, nature will automatically try to equalize the difference. The water molecules will automatically seek through the membrane into the chamber with the salt water to dilute it. This natural migration continues until the concentration or pressure on both sides is in perfect balance.
Osmosis in everyday life and nature
You actually experience osmosis all the time in your daily life without even thinking about it:
- Plants: When you water your houseplants, the roots absorb water from the soil via osmosis. The soil has a lower concentration of dissolved substances than the cells inside the plant, so the water is sucked in.
- Your cells: The human body relies heavily on osmosis to transport fluid and nutrients in and out of our cells so we don’t dehydrate.
- Raisins in water: If you put a dry raisin in a glass of water, it will swell after a few hours. The water penetrates through the raisin’s skin to balance out the high sugar content inside.
